Our school is a racially and culturally diverse school serving over seven hundred students in St. Paul, MN. Many of our students receive special services.
73% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
Almost 30% of our students are English Language Learners and about 15% of students receive Special Education services.
We are comprised of two separate schools with different programs: Montessori and Science. Students have many hands-on opportunities for learning through the Inquiry Zone, a hydroponics lab, an iPad initiative, and outdoor gardening areas. Our students are active, inquisitive children desperately in need of resources due to multiple years of school district budget cuts.
My Project
This is such a simple, basic request - stools for students to sit on when they are working - and yet it's something we just do not have in the budget to purchase. This year we are creating special activity tables in the library: puzzles, legos, and even an origami station. These will be places for student-guided exploration and will give students a chance to try things out that they do not have the opportunity to use in the classroom.
These learning stations will allow students to take a break from instruction while still engaging in tasks that promote learning.
In an elementary school it is important for things to have a purpose but also appeal to students. These stools are the perfect combination of function and design. They will give students a comfortable place to sit while they work as well as add visual interest to the library.
