Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are full of energy, excitement, and are eager to learn. Being 6 and 7 years old, instruction needs to keep them engaged and needs to be as hands-on as possible, with many opportunities for practice and creativity. They also are still developing spatial awareness.
Sitting on the rug and keeping in their own space for instruction can be a challenge for young children.
They are fun and energetic, and our classroom is full of color and excitement. First grade is a time of discovery, of incredible academic growth, and of learning about themselves. They are so open to new ideas and the world of learning is incredibly exciting.
We are a Title I school where many of our students are learning English and almost half are from low income homes. Our families are very supportive and involved with their children's education and want to do what it takes to help their children succeed. I have an incredible group of funny, smart, and enthusiastic learners!
My Project
Working with a group, reading a fun book, solving a puzzle, sitting attentively for a read aloud or mini-lesson: so much learning occurs while sitting on a classroom rug!
A classroom rug would not only provide for these activities, but it would also help create a warm and inviting environment.
We move throughout the day, from our desk, to standing and doing "Buddy Up", to sitting on the rug for lessons.
Young students have a difficult time following simple directions and don't always understand personal space. I mainstream children with special needs, and they in particular need the security and space of a "special spot". We also have a large population of English Learners, and simple directions such as "move forward" or move over" can be confusing. A rug with clear, designated "spots" would be incredibly helpful for all of my students.
A rug would provide many opportunities for more in depth teaching and learning by giving a bright, cheerful space for every student. It would also allow students the chance to concentrate more and avoid the wasted instructional time as we "move over" and make room for other students.
