I teach 24 first graders in a small town in the Mississippi Delta. These students are so eager to learn, and have a mixture of abilities and goals. A few skills these students will be learning this year include reading, writing, adding, and subtracting. These young students love to learn by using hands-on strategies and integrated technology use.
In our classroom, we support each other and push each other to be the best version of ourselves we can be.
I believe in creating a safe and positive classroom environment for my students. Many of my students don't get help or support from home, so it is my responsibility as their teacher to create a space where students want to learn and can have fun while doing so. My students don't just need academic support at my school, they need emotional support as well. They want to be loved and crave attention each and every day. I do my best to meet each of my students needs, and let them know I'm their biggest fan.
I don't know about you, but I know as an adult, I don't like to sit in a desk all day. First graders shouldn't have to do this, either. During group work or whole group learning, I would like a space for my students to all come together, and be able to get up and move around. I am asking for a very large area rug for my students. This rug will provide each student will a spot to sit and plenty of space to stretch out and do work on. Young students love to move around, lay down, and fidget while doing work. Creating this space for them will help to accommodate those needs.
My students are more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their peers when they are given the chance to move around throughout the day to complete their work.
This rug I have selected will be extremely beneficial to not only the students, but to myself as well. First graders need tons of modeling before they are ready to take off on a task of their own. This space will allow me to gather the students all together in one section and really model or show students how to complete a task given. It is also a great place to gather students for whole group instruction, insuring that everyone will be able to see close up of the content I am teacher. This rug will also serve a part in inside recess when we aren't able to go outside. It will give students a place to dance to our Just Dance and Go Noodle videos. #ISeeMe
I have seen how much having a large area rug positively affects my students and their work. We hope that you will help us grow and learn.
