Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Through curiosity and exploration, 34 preschoolers (aged 3, 4, and 5) eagerly learn about the world around them. They do so in an urban environment where resources are scarce, but opportunities can be plentiful through the support and creativity of the community around them. Our inclusive classroom provides an opportunity for children with developmental disabilities and those who are English Language Learners to thrive! High expectations and differentiated instruction encourage every child in our classroom to grow and succeed!
Our students have a lot to offer the world, given the chance and the resources to support the way they learn.
They are energetic, creative, and determined. They need materials that match their persistent and inquisitive minds so that they know no boundaries!
My Project
Early childhood classrooms are often characterized by bright and busy walls, carpets, and materials. However, it can often feel very overwhelming for children with special needs, English language learners, and newly turned three-year-olds.
Preschool is a pivotal age where children are learning to attend, engage, and persist on new tasks and challenges while learning to ignore distractions.
It is their first school experience and can often be very overwhelming, yet exciting! As they learn to attend to instruction, they have to learn to ignore distractions. This can be very difficult with so much stimuli surrounding them!
Our current classroom rug features the alphabet with beginning sound objects and bright primary colors. As we try to engage them in learning, we often lose them to wanting to sit on the lion, the queen, or the cake. When we bring instruction to the floor, a best practice to meet children on their level, our hands-on materials are often competing with these bright and busy squares. We would like to replace our carpet with a solid navy blue to help children find a spot more quickly, attend to our intended instruction, and further develop their listening and attending skills.
