My students need a classroom library that also functions as additional seating to enhance their flexible learning environment.

I have the privilege this year of educating the minds of 25 Kindergartners. Twenty-five Kindergartners who are eager to learn, excited about reading, mastering language arts, pumped about math, and so enthusiastic about the arts. However, they have come into Kindergarten in the midst of horrible budget cuts, that provide a small milestone in achieving these goals.
These passionate group of kindergarten graders, reside on the Southside of Chicago.
They have the privilege of learning in an environment that believes in personalized learning, flexible seating, and the power of technology. The students are of both African American and Hispanic descent. 99% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. However, they are learning that believing in themselves is all that matters.
My Kindergartners need a library that also serves as an additional seating to enhance our flexible learning environment and help to organize our library. My students and I have begun the journey to creating a more flexible learning environment. They understand why we provide choice in seating and how it enhances their engagement and consequently their learning. One area of our classroom that could use a reboot is our library. Our current library is stored on two, 3 shelf bookshelves in the center of the classroom. This current setup hinders the open space necessary to expand our goal of providing a flexible classroom.
My goal in purchasing these bookcases is to create an open, organized environment and provide the students with another flexible seating area.
As mentioned above, the set up of the bookcases will also provide a great system to organize our books for ease of access and viewing. This seemingly small system, is sure to make a impactful change in our learning space.
