Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am in my tenth year of teaching in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. I have a diverse group of learners with abilities as low as Kindergarten all the way up to fourth grade (above grade level). Regardless of their abilities, I have discovered that my students are eager learners that are highly motivated and want to do better each and everyday.
As a third grade teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with many challenges.
What I have learned in my career is that children are resilient and can/will persevere when faced with such challenges. This new group is no different! They are dedicated learners who are always striving to do their best.
Many of my students are coming to school each day without their basic needs being met. I have had students this year worry about where they would be staying at night or where their next meal is coming from. Although I may not have control over what my students are facing in their home life, I do have control over our classroom environment! I strive to make our room a safe, warm and loving environment where everyone is a contributing member.
My Project
By nature, I am a planner. I like things to be well thought out and planned ahead of time. I like to know what resources will be needed and have plenty of time to gather necessary resources. we received stacking stools, 2 rockers and 10 bouncy chair bands and 2 wobble stools. It was amazing to see how open the students were to the new materials. But, what I didn't plan for was every student wanting to have some sort of alternative seating option available.
Flexible classrooms give students a choice in what kind of learning space works best for them.
Students are able to work collaboratively, communicate, and engage in critical thinking while choosing what seating option works best for them! School districts around the country have been implementing flexible classrooms and have taken note of the amazing results. Since implementing flexible seating in classrooms, Albemarle County Public Schools noticed their students' grades have improved and the students seem happier and more engaged. Teachers reported that their students are participating more and having more invigorating conversations.
In room 9, each desk group will have a different seating arrangement. For example, Group 1 has 6 desks and chairs. For that group, I would remove the chairs and replace them with the 6 Children-sized balance balls. At Group 4, I would raise two desk to make them standing desks, while the other 4 desk are slightly raised and the chairs are replaced with the galvanized steel stools. Another group will have their desks lowered and they will receive cushions to sit on. Ideally, each group would have a different seating option and each week, students would be able to "try out" a new seating option. As third graders, it is important for my students to understand how they learn best.
