My students need a pedal desk for our classroom. Students will get to escape the traditional classroom desk to use movement to anchor learning in reading, writing, and Texas history. The desk will be used daily.
As our students struggle with the impact of Hurricane Harvey, they are grasping for ways to expel anxious and nervous feelings. Many of my students lost everything during the hurricane and will continue to deal with rebuilding their homes and lives for months to come.
Our campus is an phenomenal Fine Arts driven community.
All students are engaged in creating art cars, learning to play in the award-winning band and orchestra, and performing in choir concerts. The teachers in our learning community are extremely passionate about preparing our students to become productive citizens by encouraging them to become lifelong learners. The Lovett Owl community supports our students and campus unconditionally and we want to continue growing our students.
My Project
Action Based Learning provides students the opportunity to reinforce academic concepts physically. Research has shown that movement improves cognition, strengthens memory, boosts brain function, regulates behavior and prepares the brain to learn. Students are not only more focused and engaged, they are able to comprehend and synthesize more information.
By giving students the opportunity to have concepts reinforced while using the pedal desk and outside of the traditional classroom desk, students will be more engaged and feel more supported in the learning process.
The pedal desk will be used as a part of a daily, movement station. This desk is a place where students come to reinforce academic concepts, burn off some extra energy and put a smile on their face. It's a place that allows them to refocus and set the tone for the remainder of the day. They may arrive sad, mad or angry but it's my job to ensure they leave better than they came.
