My students need tools such as Sharpie pens, watercolor brushes and mirrors to practice observation skills in the art studio and the outdoor classroom.
We have 103 students in our small, rural community. Our population is <50% free and reduced price lunch. We have a great, caring community both inside and outside the school.
At our elementary school every child is an artist.
Our PreK-5 students are motivated, creative children who thrive in the art studio. Our art studio provides a space for students to build skills, participate in art challenges and create incredible original artwork. All students, grades PreK-5, participate in art at PES.
My Project
Artists throughout time have captured the world around them by looking closely at their surroundings, noticing details, and using their keen eyes to create art.
Our students need tools to help them develop their observational skills.
The Sharpie pens and watercolor brushes are compact and portable enough to take to our outdoor classroom. They can sketch and paint right in the outdoors! Students will make sketchbooks to bring outside and be able to observe and note nature like the artist Charles Burchfield.
In the classroom, students will use the mirrors to draw self portraits. We have drawn self portraits in the past from memory, but two-sided mirrors can be drawn on with dry erase markers to learn proportion and scale, even at the PreK/K level. After practice students can use a variety of materials to capture themselves in a portrait.
