Help me give my students a classroom laboratory including microscopes, animal & plant slides, along with research materials to help bring their love of science alive.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Everybody is aware of the bad rap that most middle school students get, but my students are over-comers and strive to be world changers. Covid-19 has not made the last 2 years of teaching easy, or equal, for my students. However, we continue to teach our students despite all of the obstacles that are tossed our way which have included: district wide closures, A/B schedule, 1/2 days, entire grade level quarantines, after school activity cancellations, and most importantly loss of face to face instructional time. All of this on top of the socioeconomic challenges my students already face such as 1 income households, all students are eligible for free & reduced lunch, and the childhood trauma many have faced due to the neighborhoods they come from.
Frederick Douglass must have had my students in mind when he said, "You are not judged by the height you have risen, but from the depth you have climbed."
This project proposal will allow me to begin closing the gaps that Covid-19 has caused my students. My students are resilient and I know this, but I want to help give them every opportunity possible to capitalize on their potential as tomorrow's future.
My Project
During Covid-19 we have not been able to utilize our community partners that have previously allowed our students to use their science labs for STEM projects, research, and so much more. These microscopes will allow my students to continue expanding on what they are reading in their textbooks.
With the use of these microscopes my students will begin seeing an entirely different realm of science that because of Covid-19 they have not been able to utilize over the past 2 years.
Science is a hands-on subject and these microscopes will give my students the experiences needed to begin thinking about themselves in STEM based career fields.
