Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our elementary school is a Title I school located in Hamblen County. Our school consists of 51% Hispanic students, 11% black students, and 64% economically disadvantaged students. We also have a large population of students receiving special education services. Currently we are implementing a PBIS system within our school in which we have seen amazing results such as 50% decrease in office referrals multiple years in a row. We also are a Trauma Informed Cohort school and working to implement Trauma Informed practices to benefit all of our students PreK-5.
Due to COVID-19, we continue to see an increase in mental and emotional health needs within our staff and students.
When these needs are not met we see uncharacteristic behavior, less engagement, and a decrease in their overall well-being in our students. Our staff members also experience physical and emotional fatigue while providing care for these students. We see many students that no matter what interventions we employ, they continue to need more. It is our goal to provide a calming room where both teachers and students could access and regulate their trauma responses. By supporting this project, you will help meet a growing need and ensure continued student success.
Despite the challenges our students face daily, they continue to work hard, overcome those obstacles, and achieve high academic levels. It is our hope that this space will help them to advance even further by adding a calm down room to our building. This calm down room would help to support our trauma informed practices by allowing a place for students to regulate their emotions in a safe environment. This dual purpose space would support the social and emotional health of both our staff and students.
