My Students

This school year I am excited to be teaching a new class entitled "STEAM"! During this class, elementary students are exposed to hands-on opportunities in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. During STEAM class, students are introduced to traditional and digital animation. The addition of a Green Screen Production Set, to incorporate multimedia into the classroom, will allow for kids to gain collaborative, communication and problem-solving skills.

For many of my students, their school day is the only opportunity they have to use new technology devices that incorporate STEAM skills.

We are a Title I School, which means that we receive financial assistance due to a high percentage of students from low-income families. Currently, 68% of our students receive free or reduced breakfast and lunch. Many face personal challenges outside of our learning environment. Nevertheless, they eagerly participate in my STEAM classroom and crave new learning experiences.

My Project

The STEAM movement encompasses using information and techniques learned within traditional curriculum as a departure point for students to create new ideas and to solve real-world problems through the use of design and technology. My STEAM classroom is an area in our school where innovation truly comes alive! The addition of a Green Screen Production Set will be great for ALL of my students, Kindergarten through fifth grade.

Our elementary students are our future animators, scientists, graphic designers and engineers, so they need as many STEAM experiences as we can give them to succeed.

I believe that supporting learning opportunities beyond the regular elementary class curriculum supports my professional goal of fulfilling a child's potential. One of my second graders recently shared with me a stop-motion video he made during recess (with materials borrowed from my classroom), using Legos and props built from recycled materials. I enjoyed hearing about Matthew's ability to incorporate animation concepts he learned during my STEAM class with a story he read in his science class.

Integrating STEAM concepts within the elementary curriculum meets the needs of diverse learning styles and multiple intelligences. Brain research demonstrates that learning activities which stimulate the cognitive and affective areas of the mind are vital to its optimal development. What better place to foster these type of activities than in my STEAM class!

As teachers, we are faced with the challenge of preparing students for jobs that don't yet exist. The Green Screen Production materials requested will give my students an opportunity to gain the lifelong benefits of communication and problem-solving skills that all employers are seeking in their employees, while exercising their creativity and imagination.
