Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class is a wonderful mix of cultures, languages, levels, and challenges. I have worked at this school for 29 years. And though many of our kids are from low-socioeconomic families, they are willing to try new things, love learning and having fun. We focus on teamwork, mindfulness and engagement. I have a music background, so beats and rhythms are part of my class as well.
My third grade class is challenged with learning so many new concepts.
Multiplication, state testing, and cursive writing, to name a few. I want my students to have every advantage to reach their potential.
My Project
I play and perform Japanese Kumidaiko, taiko ensemble drumming in CA and have been teaching students taiko drumming in my class and at my school for 3 years now. These new pipe drums, designed by UK taiko players, made of sturdy corrugated pipe, heavy duty tarp heads and secured with slick white polyester roping sound and feel more like the authentic wooden-barrel taiko drums that cost hundreds of dollars.
Our current set of 20 garbage can drums have outgrown their usefulness, and we're ready to move up to the next level!
While my students absolutely love to learn traditional taiko songs, often adding their own cultural expression to each song, they would sound so much more awesome on these pipe drums. My performing group has been developing their rhythmic and group listening skills, while team building across grade levels. Some are branching out into other musical instrument lessons because of the joy they experience in taiko!
Having (close to) real taiko sounding drums will give my students a feel for authentic drums, a polished look in performances, encourage younger students, and make our school proud to have an accomplished drum ensemble.
