Have you ever tried to read a book written in an unfamiliar language? That is what it feels like to struggling readers who are below their grade level. Words to them look like a foreign language. I am trying to get my students as much help as possible to succeed.
I work with struggling readers in grades 3 through 5, who are reading at average 3 years below their grade level.
Books that seem simplistic to fluent readers are a challenge to these students. They work really hard to decode common words and have a limited sight vocabulary.
My Project
The Tag Readers are the perfect tool for helping my students practice their reading skills. These books and readers will enable them to self correct and give much needed vocabulary support. These materials will further allow for independent reading, which is something these children strive for.
The excitement of reading a book alone will further encourage my boys and girls to read more.
The Tag Readers are self motivating and educational at the same time. I hope to encourage a life long love of reading for students who at this point believe they will never read on their own.
