My students are blind and visually impaired children from low-income, minority families. We have only five students in our class so that they can get the individualized instruction they need to succeed. Because of their visual impairments, they miss out on much of the incidental learning that sighted children gain through visual observation.
To help compensate for the lack of visual learning, we use a variety of tactile materials.
Tactile materials help my students express themselves through art, learn number sense, and explore properties of the world around them. With your help, we can provide more tactile experiences for my students.
My Project
Math can be especially challenging for visually impaired students. Having tactile materials helps make the subject more accessible to my students by adding touch to concepts which are often very visual. Some more traditional math aids work well for us, but we also find ways to use everyday objects in innovative ways. For example, magnetic "push-pins" make great points on numbers for Touch Math on a metal lapboard!
Our new Lego wall can also be a fun way to explore math in a tactile way, but we need more bricks to add to it.
Unfortunately, many of the pieces in our sets are very small, so we'd like to add a large set of generic building blocks which contains a lot more large bricks. With more bricks, we can use the removable baseplates from our wall to keep track of our pieces while using them as manipulatives in math equations and in learning about arrays.
