Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My robotics and programming students are brilliant and creative problem solvers. Every time that we meet, I am amazed at their willingness to persevere and help each other solve problems. Many of these students are wonderfully successful when building and programming robots, but are not successful in traditional academics. They all look forward to robotics/programming days, which is sometimes the one bright moment in their week.
"I'm good at this" are powerful words that can change the course of a life.
My goal is to engage and excite more young people, especially girls in programming and robotics projects because they are our future and they need these skills.
For many of my students, their only access to technology is at school due to the rural infrastructure and socioeconomic status of families in our school community. Although I have a thriving after school robotics/coding program with a powerful core group of girls (about 20% of the group is girls), I would like to encourage more young people, especially girls to participate by introducing them to the possibilities of an education and career in technology.
My Project
My young students are able to learn complex concepts if they are presented in a visual/tactile manner. Osmo learning systems allow students to begin learning computational logic and improve math fluency in a format that engages everyone.
Computational logic and math skills are critical to the success of all of my students.
I want them to develop the confidence with these skills so that they will continue their education and take computer science and advanced math classes when they are older. Giving my students access to 21st century technology skills is difficult in a rural, low income area where many students do not have access to technology at home.
