Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students at our elementary school desire to learn and need continued support to build their reading levels, skills, and strategies to be lifelong learners. The reading intervention lab services over 150 students daily. The lab provides direct and explicit instruction to build reading gaps for grades kindergarten through 5th. We need additional materials to reach all levels of learning modalities. Our student population is 850 plus students and 800 of those students are considered socially disadvantaged. They are dual language learners, and they live in an environment of economic scarcity and the entire school qualifies to receive free breakfast and lunch.
There are many reasons we need additional funding to support our students.
Our school is part of a K-12 grade school district, that combines funds to support two towns, and both have a large percentage of English Learners. The community is surrounded by agriculture and many of our families are employed as farm laborers. Our town is over 60 miles from Fresno, and our students have minimal exposure to enriching activities.
My Project
Our kindergarten students need a magnetic drawing board which is an engaging sensory learning tool to develop their alphabet recognition and writing skills.
The magnetic drawing board is an effective tool to develop letter formation, hand muscle development, and hand and eye coordination.
Students must hold the magnetic pen correctly in order to create an image; therefore, encouraging proper pencil grip. The tool also provides bold lines to help those that may have visual impairments. The print displays dark bold lines that allow teachers to check the students' ability and their development of writing. In addition, student engagement rises with the use of this tool as most kids relate to it as play and not work.
In closing, our kindergarten students would greatly benefit from this magnetic drawing board. It will provide high levels of engagement and skills development in the distance learning environment.
