This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students look for a place to calm down and just be kids. They don't want to be judged, and they want to place to relax. My office and the project I hope to work on will provide them with a quiet space where they can talk, draw, and reset.

My Project

Students sometime just need a quiet place to refocus for the day. l work in a community that at times pushes students along a different path than what was expected. Sometimes coming to school provides the only safe space they have.

My office will be that space where they can take a break.

I will provide books to draw, all while talking about what is going on and helping them discuss and work through their issues while at the same time listening to mediation music and breathing techniques. I have bought books and pencils for students draw, but the opportunity to listen to music and relax is usually provided by my phone.

I have asked for an Amazon Echo to play music from Pandora or any other free source. I have also asked for scanner to scan their ID as they walk into my office to keep track of who comes and to provide timestamp to count the frequency and amount of time the student is in my office. I have also asked for color pens as many students like to use pens instead of colored pencils.

I added UNO because my current UNO game is falling apart. Sometimes just playing a game of UNO has allowed students to reset and go back to class. The goal is to allow the student to come into my office, take a break, feel safe, collect their thoughts, and go back to class.
