My Students
Who can’t forget those powerful memories of being read to as a child? It opened the door to so many adventures that you couldn’t wait to become an independent reader so you could open those doors on your own. My classroom in rural Maine has children who range in varying levels of reading, but no matter where they are as a reader each one of these children seeks that adventure.
One of the greatest pleasures for my students is hearing stories read aloud as the text comes alive.
They are an active group of third graders who don’t sit still for long, but a good story is one sure way to get their attention. The enthusiasm I witness as I read to them or they read to each other spreads throughout the room helping to build a community of readers. My goal is for them to have many opportunities to read while improving their fluency as well as comprehension.
My Project
Incorporating five Acer tablets into my classroom will enable students to read aloud from their guided reading books while recording themselves. This will allow students to listen to themselves read and assess their skills in areas such as accuracy and fluency.
Integrating technology will encourage independence while taking responsibility for their reading.
My students currently have limited access to technology in the classroom. We have shared laptop carts that students access once a week and students attend computer class once a week. My students are eager to explore digital resources, such as Epic Books for Kids and Book Creator. The availability of tablets in the classroom will allow for consistent interaction while providing a richer learning environment for all.
