My students need tablets in order to access valuable educational applications that work to bridge the gap between English and students' own first languages.
Meet my amazing students- young English Language Learners hailing from Puerto Rico, Yemen, Gambia, Senegal, Dominican Republic, Cape Verde, Mali, and Bangladesh. They are strong, compassionate, and hardworking individuals. However, learning a new language is no easy task, especially within our current high stakes academic environment.
The majority of my students live below the poverty line.
They have overcome extreme adversity just to attend school here in the United States. For many of my students, success in school is their greatest hope for a brighter future. And these guys are determined to achieve it, but they could really use YOUR help!
My Project
My students speak a wide variety of languages- Wolof, Fulani, Portuguese, Bengali, Arabic, Soninke, and more! It would be next to impossible for me to learn all of them. Luckily, there are some amazing apps out there that can help to bridge the language barrier. Unfortunately, many of these apps only function on tablets. Furthermore, many of my students do not own cellphones and most do not have access to the data necessary to use these apps.
I will be able to load the aforementioned tablets with apps designed to meet the linguistic needs of each individual student.
While I do push into mainstream classrooms to aid my students, I can not be in every classroom at once, and I can not be with every student at once. These tablets will empower my students to access English learning and translation services with or without me by their side.
