Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are in a 3rd and 4th grade special Education substantially separate classroom. We work really hard on learning foundational skills such as their names, letters, basic math skills, reading/ phonics, and social skills. My students come from all over New Bedford to attend our school. They face a lot of diversities and most come from low income homes. Many of my students speak English as a second language, and often they speak another language at home.
My Project
My students come from a very low income area. Our school is very much outdated, and the state and district is constantly pushing for the shift from paper based testing to computerized testing. We do our best to practice our literacy skills, math skills, AND test taking skills (on the computer), however, our tablets/computers/technology is very limited. My students are unable to practice typing daily, a skill that they will have had to master in order to complete the MCAS 2.0 writing open response questions. A lot of my students struggle with learning to type, because they are not exposed to it often.
These tablets would make using internet resources in the classroom possible.
It would also allow for my students to practice their test taking skills and writing skills (via keyboard & computer), which are both essential to taking the MCAS tests.
