I work in a lower socioeconomic area of the United States and that would lead many people to think that my students really wouldn't care about being on the leading edge of technology or even education. That couldn't be farther from the truth. The problem with being in such an area isn't that the students don't care, it is they don't believe anyone else cares enough to help them be leaders. My students long to acheive at every level and it is displayed in the manner in which my students act in school and during extra curricular activities.
I teach in the Mississippi Delta region and over 66% of our student population is on free and reduced lunch.
Even thout we come from a small school my computer science students are among the top scorers in the Governor's Coding Competition. My students are driven to succeed at every level
My Project
While we have one of the top computer science programs in our area, we still don't offer AP computer science courses at our school. In order to offer AP Computer Science A at our school we will need some help with some equipment. While computer science is all about logic and problem solving we want to take it a step farther and create apps of our own. Using these tablets we will be able to not only create apps but download and run these apps as well.
Our students want to create apps that will solve problems and sell them on the App Store or Play Store.
This entreprenurial spirit will help to create lifelong learners and problem solvers. Which can in turn lead to professions for life.
