Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is a self-contained special education classroom that has students with mild to moderate disabilities, including speech and language, emotional, learning, and intellectual disabilities. The majority of my students are also English Language Learners. They are hardworking and, despite their challenges, have a desire to learn! Each student is a unique individual who brings joy to our classroom. Our school is a Title I school where 90% of our students receive free or reduced meals. In my classroom each student receives free breakfast and free lunch. Our school is unique as we have a large population experiencing homelessness.
My students have made so much growth this year, and with your support can continue to grow!
They have become active participates in the school community and are enjoying learning. This year I am getting a whole new set of students! This group is even more unique as most of my students are entering their first year in a special day class!
My Project
These Fire tablets will allow my students to become more comfortable using technology. My students do not have access to technology at home, and for most of them the only time they see or use electronics is during school. They often have never held a tablet until they have entered school! They are still learning how to use technology in the classroom, however when they have access to it the adaptive and education programs available have increased their independence and confidence.
My students benefit greatly from the wide variety of apps and programs geared toward students with special needs.
They will be introduced to electronic books, which will allow my students access to reading books independently by using text-to-speech software. They have a desire to read and learn, and having the option of having the story they want to hear read to them increases that desire to learn.
My students have recently been introduced to speech-to-text technology. This has allowed them to be more independent when expressing their ideas they have during writing. These tablets will be used during our language arts time for reading and writing, as well as during independent work time!
