My students need tablets to help with research, learning and reinforcing skills. They will be used in small group settings, as well as enhance independent work.
My students come from culturally diverse homes in a low socio-economic neighborhood. They come from families who are very dedicated to their children and their education, but often struggle with helping their children due to language differences and lack of formal education.
My class is made up of students with various learning difficulties and special educational needs.
Each student is motivated to learn, but may learn in a way different from the student sitting next to them.
We spend the year learning about nutrition, scientists, explorers, space, etc. My students learn best when they have hands-on, engaging activities that can be connected to their own lives.
My Project
This year I will be teaching a class made up of both 4th and 5th graders with special needs. These tablets will help students work in small groups or independently, as another group receives instruction.
These tablets will be used to help students reinforce skills in mathematics and ELA using online platforms, such as Prodigy and Achieve 3000.
They will be used to help students research various topics such as nutrition, animal adaptations, explorers, outer space, scientists and native Americans. Students can watch videos, read articles and play games to learn more about these topics. This will help foster independent research skills.
Technology like this can help struggling students, as online articles can be read to students. Students will also be able to use these tablets as a reward for great work, great behavior and great attitudes towards learning. Students can read books, play games or watch videos to enhance what they have learned in the classroom, as well as learn new things at their own pace. Technology plays such a big role in their lives outside the classroom that using it in the classroom makes learning more fun, more accessible and more up to date.
