Imagine you are in a new place with new faces... speaking a new language. Imagine the only home that you've ever known is thousands of miles away. And in this new place, you are expected to sit still and read this new language alone.
My students come from five different continents from countries all around the world.
They never had a TV or the Internet. They never had books of their own. Some of them never learned to read in their first language. School such as in the United States is a totally new experience. They come as blank slates.
My students still lack the money to buy computers for their homes. The neighborhood that they live in is not safe enough to walk to the public neighborhood every time they need to use the internet or to type a paper. They require additional support in the classroom.
My Project
Schools in the United States demand so much from these students on top of just assimilating to the culture. Integrating technology is crucial to help build vital prior knowledge.
The tablets that I am requesting will help my students to access the Internet and books online. A program that I am looking into will read a wide array of books to the student at his or her pace. Also, they can look up words that they do not know.
We cannot use the program without the tablets. My school has pad carts that are taken out by other teachers before I have the chance to request them.
With these tablets and keyboards, my students will have the opportunity to use this technology whenever they want since they will be for only my English as a Second Language program.
We can work on different activities and tailor lessons to them since they can listen to books being read to them. They can become dependent and attempt to reach grade level. I know that they will appreciate this technology immensely!
