The economy is terrible! Even in the best of times, public school students are forced to do more with less. My students have print texts more than 10 years old and very little in the way of modern technology. How can they learn about an ever changing field like science with outdated information?
My students live in a world where extreme poverty, single parent homes, drug abuse and inordinately high unemployment are far too common.
The rural Georgia community in which they reside has a small tax base and funding is an issue even in the best of times. As we all know, these are decidedly not the best of times. However, even in the face of tall challenges, my students are a curious and precocious group who will rise any challenge when properly motivated and equipped.
My Project
The primary challenge with my student demographic is overcoming a defeatist, worn down attitude that many of them carry from home into the classroom. Their texts are old. Their building is old. The technology they have access to is outdated. They will need technological fluency when they matriculate into college or the workforce. Beginning to upgrade the technology available to them will greatly increase their ability to research current information, motivate them because someone is investing in them and create a foundation of technological efficiency that they will need as they move forward in their lives. Please, help my students get their hands on an iPad to improve their learning!
The number one challenge with my students is to motivate them to believe that opportunity for achievement, a college career or a professional career is actually within their reach.
They look around and see other school systems who simply have more than they do. The broadest impact that this technology will have on my classes is the to aid me in convincing them that they can achieve if they simply put their minds to it.
