Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live in a low-income/high poverty city and all of them qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Unfortunately, by the time they enter first grade, most of my students have already been burdened with more challenges than many adults face in a lifetime. Many of my students come from single parent homes. Some live with court appointed guardians or foster families. Many have entered first grade without ever having learned the alphabet or held a book. This means that together, we have two years worth of learning to squeeze into one year. Adding to this, is the fact that our urban school district never has enough funding to meet the varying needs of our very diverse population. This means a lack of funding for all classroom supplies especially technology that is vitally needed so that the kids will be able to compete with their suburban peers and be successful when entering the 21st century workforce. For these reasons it is imperative for the kids to have working computers in our classroom.
My Project
While their instruction is provided by me in our classroom, the first graders desperately need to have technology readily available in order for them to practice the strategies and skills from the instruction. Unfortunately, our district just doesn't have the funds to provide that technology the way we really need it. This past year we had 30 tablets to split between 250 first and second graders. That just isn't enough. Having these tablets would make a world of difference for the first graders as it will provide them with an opportunity to explore new math concepts they have learned and will also give them a chance to practice working with phonics which will help them to learn how to read.
