My students are gifted and talented; they excel academically despite being in one of the most economically-challenged zones in an otherwise affluent district.
I model a growth mindset for these future teachers, doctors, engineers, lawyers, and politicians.
They strive to reach higher levels of success in a school building that is the oldest and most overlooked in our district. These students need an environment that's as responsive and unique as they are; flexible seating is a great start for us!
My Project
We need tablets! That's just the simple fact of public education today. My students are gifted and talented, and they devour the daily learning opportunities I provide and want MORE! We use a variety of educational apps in our classroom to extend and enhance our curriculum, but it's never enough for these curious learners.
Our desktops and laptops are outdated; our laptops are not even portable anymore due to batteries that need to be replaced.
Why spend more money on worn out technology when it's ready to replaced? Tablets are what my students need to best use the full functionality of the software we use in class. They need access to device cameras so they can add work samples immediately to their online portfolios. They need reliable connectivity so they can research safely when curiosity strikes, and believe me, that's often!
These kids deserve the very best of what technology can offer. They work hard, make good choices, are overcoming the odds, and will change the future, but they still feel they have no options. Recently I scheduled a speaker to visit two of my classes to discuss a topic that would enrich a course of study with which we're currently involved. When I told my students an Aerospace Engineer from Georgia Tech Research Institute was coming to speak to them, one of them actually asked me, "Why is he coming here instead of one of the other places he could go?" That question sent a powerful message to me, and I will do what I can to change this opinion! Your contribution to our project will do the same thing!
