My students need a class set of 5 Android tablets to research information, read instructional material, and access the speech to text applications. All of my students struggle with reading and read significantly below grade level.
My students attend a small, rural school in Oklahoma. We do not have the resources that many of them need due to budget restraints and the current condition of Oklahoma's Educational System. My special education resource room serves 2-10 kids hourly. Students come to me for added support with their classroom assignments, emotional support, life skill training, and advice on issues they may be facing. These students face an array of issues daily from social skill difficulties, learning disabilities, autism, and intellectual disabilities.
I would like to be able to help these students be more successful academically by providing them with the technology they need to research information, access online textbooks and use speech to text applications for low readers.
By providing these students with tablets, I will be able to teach them the information they need to learn in a mode that is most appropriate for their generation.
My Project
The use of tablets will be an hourly activity in my classroom. My special education students come to me hourly on different levels and needing help on different subjects. These students are responsible for learning classroom content in a traditional style. I want to bring the use of technology to help them access information quickly, access speech to text applications to aid with reading difficulties, and to provide them with online high-interest low readability material.
The gift of tablets will help students pass required classes needed to get their high school diplomas, by allowing them to use a tool that is familiar to their generation.
We can no longer teach students in the traditional format, we must reach out and teach them in the way that they learn. The use of technology provides the foundation of learning for the new generations of students. These students deserve our help and assistance in becoming the best citizens of tomorrow.
