I teach in a co-teach classroom of 4th grade students. With a double class of students, keeping them motivated and engaged can be a challenge. Technology is often the best tool for this age group to encourage participation and instill an excitement for learning. In addition to motivation, many of our students have limited access to technology at home. The world we live in depends so heavily on devices, it is important for me to exposed them as much as possible to the learning that is available through the use of technology in the classroom. Last but not least, my classroom contains so many levels of learners that differentiation on a daily basis in all subjects is a challenge. Through the use of technology, I will be better able to challenge some students while remediating others. Having meaningful technology in the classroom allows me to work with small groups, knowing that all my other students are deeply engaged in learning.
My Project
Classrooms today are a mixture of diverse cultures as well as diverse abilities. Our student population ranges from English Language Learners, to students below level filling in learning gaps, all the way to gifted students who need advanced enrichment in their curriculum in order for them to continue to grow. One tablet is capable of meeting all of those needs. The apps that are available these days can accommodate learners of all ages, ability ranges, and cultures. Each - thoughtfully used - device can be an assistant teacher in the classroom, allowing the teacher to work with small groups or even one-on-one as needed while ensuring that ALL students' learning needs are being met.
