I am an elementary special education teacher and I get to work with some of the most fun and amazing kids ever! My students have a wide range of disabilities and it can be challenging to find lessons to reach them all, but they are an enthusiastic group and love to participate in the lessons I plan.
They are fearless when it comes to technology and, as children of the 21st century, they need to be prepared to use a variety of tools to engage their world.
No matter the task, each and every one of my students is willing to give it their best shot! In my classroom we do not use the phrase " I can't, instead we focus on "what can we do to make the situation better?" My students come from a wide range of economic levels and cultural backgrounds, however, their want and need to learn will always be the same!
My Project
If my classroom was able to receive two Amazon Fire Tablets it would be beneficial for my students in many ways. My students have a very difficult time learning new skills. There are thousands of apps for students especially those with disabilities. The different apps and online will be used for communication, literacy development, reading for enjoyment, video modeling, vocabulary learning, math development, social emotional learning, behavior skills and strategies and simply for motivation.
In my classroom, positive reinforcement plays a major factor in my students learning.
They have a difficult time attending to tasks, so they require constant positive reinforcement to act as a motivator. In addition, since a lot of my students come from low income families, they are not able to be exposed to the benefits of tablets at home. Since it utilizes a touchscreen, the Fire tablet is more accessible for children who have learning or coordination difficulties. A tablet can also go wherever the child goes, which means they will have ways to calm, and focus throughout the entire school building and transitions.
Tablets serve as a great tool for learning and communication which are two areas my students struggle in. Since Tablets are customizable, I would be able to tailor it to my students specific needs and create personalized lesson plans. With the touch screen on the Tablet, my students can watch as one of their fingers directly writes on the screen to make selections, which in turn helps improve their fine motor skills.
