Tablets for Special Needs Students to Soar

My students need 6 Amazon Kids Fire Tablets to help differentiate their learning styles so each can meet their own individual special education goals and learn as much as possible about the world around them.

My Students

My students are joys and very different from one another. They are part of our special education program but spend part of their day in a general education setting. They all are diagnosed with some form of exceptionality (disability), be it cognitive or behavioral.

All of my students are African-American and strive to do so much more than what society expects of children with special needs.

They are almost all from the city of New Orleans and have very limited experience with the world outside of the city, if any at all. Almost all receive free or reduced lunch.

I am constantly surprised by the stories they tell me of things that have happened in their neighborhood or things that they have experienced at such a young age, some of which I would hope no one would have to experience. They still manage to come to school daily and try their best in my class and in their general education setting. Even though they have such great challenges in front of them they still come to school each day with a smile.

My Project

I provide special education services to students that range from 1st to 4th grade that spend at least part of their day in a general education classroom. When they come to me, it's their time to feel incredibly successful. I provide them with work at their current level that will help them to bridge the gap to their regular class work. They get pushed incredibly hard, but since they are not all on the same level, it can be challenging to make all their work individualized completely.

Because I don't have my own classroom due to the nature of my work, my students, who need the most individualized attention, don't have access to any technology.

I hope to use the tablets to cater to each of my student's needs to help push them further. The amount of personalization I could do with my students and the individual attention they would be able to receive because of the addition of tablets would be paramount in helping the students that sometimes get overlooked in school. They will also be able to gain technology skills they will need as they enter the 21st Century as part of a future labor force.
