I teach about 100 6th graders in their first year of middle school. Like most students in middle school, they are full of life and ready to face the world head-on. They are ready to challenge life's rules, but also ready to listen and learn. They are inquisitive and hard-working, though impulsive at times, but amazingly empathetic and reflective as well.
Like everyone, they want to learn and succeed, and I want to provide them with every opportunity and experience to do so.
As budding scientists, my students are eager to learn how the world around them works. The scientific understandings we adults take for granted are often magical wonders to my students. As their 6th-grade science teacher, I am fortunate to be the one providing them with their first year of a dedicated lab science, teaching them the inquiry process and rich content. It is often difficult to keep their questions from blurting out once they get started. I’m always challenging myself to match my science class to meet their enthusiasm.
My Project
Having a set of tablets opens a world of possibilities for my students. Right away, I know we will be using them to photograph the crabs we find along the coast of Maine in our invasive species unit. This data can then be uploaded to share with scientists in Maine and beyond who are in need of this data. I also know the students will use these tablets to document their STEM projects like the balloon car racers and be able to show just how they use the Engineering Design Process. I want to take these out on field trips and document the local Maine geology and then bring those images back to class and examine them more closely.
By being able to document their work visually, they will not just be getting an exciting new tool, but they will have the opportunity to make their science experience more authentic.
And as I continue to modify my curriculum, these tablets will help me to provide even more exciting opportunities so that I wouldn't have even considered before. I hope to use these for video and audio recordings that would augment my curriculum. Down the road, I hope to be able to get portable microscopes so we can use the tablets even more in field. This is not to mention all the apps that would be available for me to use with my students. These tablets will kickstart so many new and exciting opportunities for my students.
