Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As the United States becomes a more culturally and ethnically diverse nation, public schools are becoming more diverse, too. The Census Bureau projects that by the year 2100, the U.S. minority population will become the majority with non-Hispanic whites making up only forty percent of the U.S. population. Students need to learn how to interact in a diverse environment. Students who attend schools with a diverse population develop an understanding of the perspectives of children from different backgrounds and learn to function in a multicultural, multi-ethnic environment. Many of our families and faculty are first and second generation citizens representing Cuba, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Ireland, Romania, Costa Rica, Brazil, Portugal, England, Venezuela, Cape Verdean, Chile, Ecuador, Congo and the Philippines.
Our Vision is to be a model, urban middle school that values and celebrates diversity and is renowned for its academic excellence and its support of the emotional well-being of the school community.
My Project
My students have really enjoyed the Dash and Dot robots. When I saw the new CUE robots, I jumped on them.... a little too fast, as they require HD 8 tablets. We have been fundraising for months in order to purchase new tablets. Now we are ready!
If we teach a child to help another, they will change the world.
My Middle School students have created a "BOT SQUAD" to teach programming to the kindergarten and first graders during their study halls. I am beyond thrilled that they see the value of teaching others how much fun technology can be!
