Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
How can we close the achievement gap when students do not have the necessary materials to succeed? Many of our students have experienced trauma in their lives and have difficulty coming to school due to their immigrant status.
Our classes serve students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities.
The typical student in my class reads at a third grade level and many struggle with basic phonics and number sense. 90% of my students are African American or Latino immigrants.
Even though many of my students lack the skills to read and write in English, they are extremely bright and have lots of potential. Many of our classrooms are dilapidated, textbooks are outdated and technology is virtually nonexistent. As a Special Education teacher I am expected to deliver excellent instruction in Science, Math/Consumer Math, English and Social Studies without the requisite tools to teach our students.
My Project
Tablets can be a very useful tool for everyone, it can provide information at your fingertips. With the completion of this project we hope to be able to provide a few tablets for the class room so the students can work in groups and do research.
Today's technology is at our disposal to improve our students learning.
These tablets will be used to search videos, take photos, research project information and even be creative to do great art work. To protect the tablets this project will include cases and screen protectors in order to last years for future students. We are looking forward to get new technology in class.
