My students need tables to have closer proximity to the teacher during explicit models of English and vocabulary instruction, to receive additional support throughout lessons, and increased opportunities to collaborate with peers.
I teach English as a Second Language in a low income/high needs school where breakfast, lunch, and snack are free for students. Students at my school engage in rigorous academic work and new vocabulary daily. This is particularly challenging to my students because my students are also learning English at the same time. My students often need additional time and alternative ways to practice, learn, and build vocabulary in order to successfully tackle the rigorous academic work in the classroom.
My ESL students are INSPIRING!
My Project
My students practice listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities daily in order to increase confidence as they learn English. This means it is extremely important that my students have, not only a comfortable classroom climate, but also that I provide a model of English (that students can easily see and hear) and ample opportunities to practice. I work with my students in groups for a half hour at a time therefore, time is limited and every second is valuable. It is important to have tables where all students can work, with not only me, but each other. This will enable me to maximize the time on task with students and keeps students more engaged.
Having closer proximity to my students will give me the opportunity to hear students as they speak English independently as well as when they speak collaboratively.
I will also have the ability to monitor students language closely as they are working which enables me to provide immediate feedback and assistance as needed.
