In our small Title I School over half of the students receive free or reduced lunch. There are also several students that are part of the backpack bunch, a group of students who receive food to stock their pantries over the weekend. They come from a variety of backgrounds, but they all have one thing in common: they love to learn.
My students enter my math classroom curious about what the day has in store for them.
They are eager to learn and love being in school. They ask questions and get involved in our lessons. They love to work with partners and in groups. My students know it is okay to make mistakes, and they can respectfully agree or disagree with each other until they have found the correct answers. In our classroom, we are all part of one big team.
My Project
My students love to move. They are constantly standing and wiggling around in their seats. It is hard for them to get comfortable in their regular desks and chairs. These tables will give me the opportunity to start flexible seating in my classroom. I will be able to adjust the tables to standing height so that students can stand while working or lower them so students can sit on pillows or wobble stools. Students will be able to choose their seat based on where they learn best: standing, sitting in a chair, or on the floor.
The donations for this project will have a huge impact on cooperative groups in my math class.
The students work with partners or in groups on a daily basis during our math discussions and stations. We play games, make charts, have math talks, and more. The desks that are currently in my room are old, wobbly, and uneven. It is difficult for students to work together on such uneven surfaces. They often have to get on the floor to have a flat surface for charts. Game pieces, such as dice or counters, don't stay in place if a student leans on a wobbly desk. It is frustrating to students and can often cause disarray in our classroom during math stations.
I have three math classes each day, and with limited time in each class, these problems take away from our valuable instructional time. Your donation will help my students have a neat, flat, and sturdy workplace and will help students stay on task in a position where they are most comfortable and ready to learn.
