I teach in a low income school district in North Carolina. My school is a Title 1 school where 100% of the school population receives free breakfast and lunch daily. Some of my students also receive blessings in a backpack, which is a bag full of food to take home for the weekend. Many of my students face daily challenges that others take for granted such as where the next meal will come from. Some students come to school hungry. This plays a huge role in their attention span and eagerness to learn.
Despite the challenges my students face, they enjoy coming to school, engaging in their learning, and facing positive challenges that require them to use critical thinking skills.
They love researching new topics and creating presentations. I actually had a student ask me if I would assign them one President a week so they could conduct research and create a presentation on him.
My students are amazing and I want to use every resource I can to help them reach their full potential.
My Project
Tables will be an excellent resource in our classroom because it allows for students to work collaboratively. The desks we currently have are falling apart and the legs are no longer able to be adjusted so they vary in heights. It makes it very difficult to put them together in groups. My students love working in groups but need solid workspace to be able to complete projects and tasks.
Tables for teamwork will allow my students to work together as a team and create more meaningful relationships.
I like to incorporate a variety of group activities to promote independent thinking and problem solving skills by allowing students to work together to find the solution instead of asking the teacher for the answers.
