In a typical science classroom, most science teachers need their students to work in groups when completing activities. Most of the activities need a flat surface. In my classroom it has become more and more difficult for my students to get the full experience of the science activities because we do not have the use of a lab or any type of work area that has a flat surface except for the floor. Some of these students are still feeling the affects of the hurricanes we experienced at the beginning of the school year. Any extra social interaction among these students greatly encourages them to move on and seperate from their current situation. I really love when my students work in groups. As they get closer to working in the real world, I feel that group work is a great teaching tool for that experience. Having tables and chairs would allow me to teach this concept everyday. The students would have no choice but to depend on each other to figure out the problem. Adolescents these days depend too much on the adults in their lives to get things accomplished. As they begin to grow up, they need to learn independent social skills and how to figure things out for themselves. Now, when it comes to actual science experiences, some of the activities require a flat surface. From activities involving motion to experiments in chemical changes having a HIGHER flat surface would be a fabulous attribute to the activities in my science classroom.
