Help me give my students new tables for cooperative learning in our classroom. Our current seating is comprised of broken and dilapidated tables and chairs that are constantly deteriorating.
My 7th grade math classes total approximately 90 students. They come from a rural, southern Louisiana area. They are eager to learn new things and know the importance of a great education. Students range in ages from 11-14 years old, which is the most important age for building a lifelong foundation for the love of learning.
When it comes to our classroom , it is important for it to be organized, bright and functional.
This helps to keep my students engaged in the lessons daily. I take great pride in knowing that the learning environment I provide for my students is just that! Our materials are labeled in easy-to-find places to eliminate unnecessary disruptions. We work hard at the beginning of the year to practice transitions so that we are not losing valuable time during the lessons moving from activity to activity.
These students are at a fun age, gaining their independence and learning essential skills to better aid them in adulthood. I treasure my time with them and look forward to teaching them how math is used in our daily lives.
My Project
In our math class, we work in cooperative groups daily. At the start of the year we had individual student desks that were arranged into groups but this created so much congestion in our small space that there was no room to maneuver between groups. We were tripping over belongings and the students were entirely too close to each other.
I decided to search for used tables at garage sales and pick through our school's collection of furniture rejects, even picking up a few items from the side of the road if they caught my eye.
These recycled tables have helped free up some much-needed space, making it easier to move around and work together, but they are not holding up well. Several are on their last (taped, band-aided, stabilized) leg. This project would allow us to retire these worn-out tables and get uniform seating throughout the classroom.
