My students are energetic, eager, and creative first graders. Our school is a small Title I school that is in a rural area. Most of my students are from low income households; they even need basic school supplies. Many of my students have not been outside of the small rural community they live in.
I strive for my classroom to be a nurturing, loving environment in which my students feel safe to explore educational opportunities, ask questions, and express themselves.
Creating a family environment for my students is essential to me because I have several students that do not come from traditional homes. Some of them live in foster homes and others are raised by single parents or even grandparents.
My Project
Please help provide a table and seat covers for my first grade students. These items will help foster a collaborative learning environment for our classroom. I will be using these tables for the students to collaborate on math projects and math center time. Tables will give an opportunity for the students to spread out math manipulatives and work together, where there is not as much room on small desks. We have received two tables through funding and are would like to continue transitioning everyone from desks to tables for collaborative learning.
We currently do not have enough table space for all students and my desire is for all students to work in collaborative groups because learning is a cooperative endeavor.
My goal is to eventually have all tables in my classroom so that kids are not isolated at individual desks. The tables keep the room more organized and promote a family feel. Tables will help us collaborate during our math and financial literacy projects. Tables will give students an opportunity to spread out different amounts of money in order to group the money by amounts/coins/dollars. Tables will also foster more opportunity for discussion when we learn about using our money for wants and needs. There are many ways in which a table would be more beneficial in our math and financial literacy learning.
I am requesting seat sacks for my students so they will have their own personal space for their belongings and math manipulatives.
