Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Middle school (6th-8th) is a time where students are beginning to refine skills such as hand-eye coordination. Some of the students are off to a good start with their hand-eye coordination, reflex, and reaction time that is needed in table tennis. These skills are formed through practice which creates muscle memory and are skills which can be transferred to other sports and activities. Meanwhile, there are students who are beginners and it is their first time holding a table tennis paddle.
Students at this school are competitive, passionate, and thrive when the competition is fun.
I am a Physical Education Teacher in an impoverished urban area. Our students come from low-income families and 100% of our students receive free and reduced-price meals. Students and families lack access to basic equipment needed for leisure time. In physical education, students build their skills by partnering up and engaging in cooperative play. The students also enjoy competitive play regularly during sports units.
Thanks to several donors I received 1 regulation table this school year. The student and I would be ecstatic to accommodate the increased interest in table tennis by getting 3 more tennis tables.
My Project
The 3 table tennis tables will help me accommodate the influx of students interested in playing table tennis. I am currently working with 1 table and I have students coming in before, during, and after school to play. The P.E department will reach over 800 students next school year.
At the moment, I have 20 students who are highly interested in playing and improving their skills but they are very limited on time because they all have to share one table.
These students are working cooperatively to improve their skills and continue to thrive in a competitive environment. The 3 tables will be spread out throughout the gym to accommodate more players and will allow for more practice time. The students will be in a rotation at the tables in order to practice with different students. Many of these students come in before and after school, therefore, the tables will serve a dual purpose because they will be utilized for a teaching table tennis during physical education.
