Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Health/Physical Education teacher in an urban school in Philadelphia serving at-risk and minority students. The school is an accelerated high school for students who are behind in high school credits and in danger of dropping out of high school. The students here have amazing potential and are great kids. They work hard every day but unfortunately aren't afforded the same resources others may have in other schools. The majority of students in my school come from low-income households, and many students have dealt with unimaginable challenges due to crime, violence, and other obstacles, but they really want to thrive both as students and members of the community.
This is my third year at this school and we have very limited resources.
With the help of generous community partners and individuals, we have took it upon ourselves to provide our students with quality gym equipment. We are requesting a ping pong table (table tennis), some paddles, some ping pongs, a set of foam soccer balls, and a few more frisbees. Your help and contributions will be a huge help to students who actually need it! Thank you for your generosity and compassion!
My Project
A kid's zipcode should never determine the quality of their education. When I arrived at my school 3 years ago we did not have any physical education equipment. Gym is more than rolling a baskeball out and playing basketball all year long. The students need variety and they deserve the same resources you'd see in the suburban schools. Every year, with the help of generous and altruistic donors like you, we work to bring in more quality equipment so the students can enjoy the class and get exposed to many different activities and games. The end goal is to make exercising fun and to encourage a passion for lifelong fitness and exercise. Again, one of the biggest obstacles is funding and resources in Philadelphia Public Schools so your help is desperately needed.
The equipment for this project will greatly enhance the lives of hundreds of students every year!
Who doesn't enjoy a good game of table tennis? The frisbees will be used for games of Frisbee Golf and also Ultimate Frisbee. The foam soccer balls are necessary to take the sting out of getting hit with a traditional soccer ball, so it makes the game safer for everyone. It's a win/win! Again, I can't thank all of you enough for your help. The past 2 projects that were funded have really made a huge impact on the lives of my students and the class; I'm sure this project will do the same! We couldn't do it without your help! Thank you!
