Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in an urban district where students grow up quickly. My 8th grade ELA students are ambitious and driven. They have big plans for their futures and love trying new things. These are students who are extremely self-aware and strong advocates for themselves. I have no doubt that I have some serious power players in my classes who will change the world.
My students know what they need in order to be the best learners that they can be.
This is a huge help to me as an educator because their abilities to articulate themselves like this works to help me set personal goals for each individual learner. As an educator, my goal is to provide them with the kind of education that they deserve. I want them to know how much I care about them and their success.
My Project
Currently, I teach students who are all over the map in their learning (pun intended- we use MAP Test to benchmark!). I want to be able to pull groups of students and address common instructional needs so that all of them can grow academically.
We have these large desks in our classroom right now that are kind of awkward and take up a lot of space in the classroom.
They aren't exactly ideal for collaborative learning and I find that many students would prefer to sit on the floor or at the resource table at the back of the classroom. It's also extremely difficult to pull the kids in groups because it means rearranging these large desks. I'd like to get rid of the desks and use tables for my students instead. By having my students sit at tables, they are interacting and creating a positive classroom climate. The horseshoe table also affords me the opportunity to call students to a section of the room where I can challenge them or provide assistance as needed.
Ultimately, I'm looking to turn my classroom into an environment where I can reach the needs of every single student who enters through my door.
