I teach English and Creative Writing in an urban high school. My students come from different socio-economic and cultural backgrounds, thus creating a diverse population of learners. Our school serves approximately eighteen hundred students, and over fifty percent of students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Ten percent of our students do not speak fluent English and many students come from homes in which English is not the primary spoken language. There are about thirty-four different languages spoken in the homes of our students.
My students are typical teenagers; they all have the potential to move forward and be successful citizens and leaders of the world.
However, many students are disengaged, which leads to lower grades and absenteeism. Many students don't have safe spaces at home or in their neighborhoods. School is supposed to be a safe haven for them and they need a welcoming environment to help keep them engaged in learning and motivated to attend classes regularly. I try to provide this atmosphere for my students, but I am limited to a lack of resources.
My Project
My welcoming classroom environment is almost perfect! Knowing that I will host more students in my classes next school year, I need more tables for students to sit comfortably. My safe and creative space allows for students to choose whether or not to sit alone, with a partner, or with a small group. In order to offer this choice to each of my students while our size increases, we need more tables.
It is crucial for the students to be able to work individually, in pairs, or in small groups to serve all learners in my classes.
We also have differing needs for different activities, and students need more room to spread out and feel comfortable. My initiative to motivate disengaged students will not work if they feel closed in and crowded in our space. I want students to feel at home and feel like they have room to both learn and create.
