We have military families, special education students, gifted and talented students, English Language Learners, and students from a variety of cultures and religions. Many of my students are movers; they can't sit still. My students deserve every opportunity possible to succeed. They thrive on community interaction, positive reinforcement, and choices. They must have access to state of the art knowledge to prepare them for the careers of tomorrow. One of the great things about having so many diverse students is the unique perspective they all bring to our conversations. Our school community is comprised of students who can speak over 30 different languages, students who have lived outside of the US, students who have challenges we cannot imagine, and students who refuse to give up.
My Project
I have already begun to place flexible seating in my classroom. I built a standing desk and have seen the difference in the students who have chosen to use it and the addition of these tables would increase improve the learning environment in our classroom. The addition of more flexible seating, like these tables, has been proven to empower students by giving them some degree of choice and control over their environment. The flexible seating has opened up space in our classroom and allowed students to feel more relaxed and focused. Traditional desks take up unnecessary space, making mobility around the classroom more difficult, for myself and my student. This lack of classroom mobility and space tends to make students territorial or possessive over their space and less likely to collaborate. Flexible seating encourages students to collaborate, share ideas, and move about the room as needed. These tables will increase the number of seating options available; they will increase the amount of open space in our classroom, thus increasing student interactions with the learning environment.
