Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Thriving, flourishing, victorious. These are just a few synonyms for the word successful. Each of them can be used to describe how I want my students to feel when they are engaged in writing and speaking.
Our school is a Title 1, Program Improvement school that serves a low socio-economic area.
Many of my students entered fifth grade at least 1-2 years below grade level in both reading and writing, and many of them are English language learners. One of the major issues I'm seeing is that they have extremely limited vocabularies. A lack of literacy rich home environments compounds the deficiency, so it's my task to find every opportunity to expose these children to power of words.
My Project
An enriched vocabulary is essential for success in reading, writing, and speaking; the core components of any balanced literacy program. As they build their personal vocabularies, my students will become more confident readers, authors, and orators. With daily use of their personal thesaurus, they will gain a deeper understanding of the nuances of words they choose while writing. Students will use the thesauri during writers' workshop, in our literacy and research centers, and in their reading groups. The end result will be students with more vibrant vocabularies, improved and refined writing skills, and more confident self expression. I am requesting 20 copies of the Merriam-Webster Intermediate Thesaurus reference books.
Having a thesaurus ready to use at their desk, my students will be able to begin using more sophisticated academic vocabulary that will directly impact their success in school and life!
They will become fluent writers and speakers with incredible vocabularies. What more could a teacher want for her students? Your generous donation will give our fifth grade students, this year and in the years to come, the boost they need!
