My high school students live in a small, rural community, a bedroom community for larger surrounding towns. Our families are far from affluent with over 32% of the high schoolers qualifying for free and reduced-price lunch. This is my first year in this district’s high school. I have already developed relationships with many students. They are quite involved in sports and clubs, despite the real life challenges many are facing daily. They love to learn new things, especially if they see real life application. In my MS Office course, I show students how to format a block letter and resume while uncovering Word’s tools. In Excel, students research local ads for apartments, develop a monthly budget, and apply basic formulas for calculations. Robotics unleashes critical thinking and collaboration!
Although my students come to class eager to learn new ways to create and format documents and work on LEGO EV3 robots, their initial daily ritual is scouring my room to find the least broken chair.
My Project
In our computer lab, we currently have a hodge-podge of chairs in mixed conditions. At the beginning of class, students scurry to find the best of the chair choices in order to sit as comfortably as possible for our 90 minute block periods.
We need to replace many broken chairs and create a learning environment which encourages collaboration and focus, one where students can thrive.
