Help me give my students the ability to access different reward options such as switch adapted toys, switches to activate these fun toys, and the wires that help turn these into accessible toys!
I'm a Speech-Language Pathologist for our school district. My student populations include preschool, middle school, and high school.
Verbal or non-verbal, my students are finding ways to make their voices heard.
The school district that I work in is low-income and culturally diverse. All of my students are eager to work hard on their communication skills and learn. While working on speech and language goals, they love to play board and card games. Some of my students use devices to communicate. Helping these students find their voice is such a fun and rewarding job!
My Project
These materials will be used for preschool students and middle school students with special needs. The materials that I've requested are for students who might not be able to access an iPad or play with toys the way that typical children can. The "switches" allow the student to interact with a toy or iPad to make it do something (i.e., playing/stopping music or videos, playing a game, or making a battery-powered toy move/sing/dance/etc.). The toys that are included in this project are specially adapted for students that I work with. These toys have been hacked to be accessible by everyone using a single big button (a "switch) that is hooked into the toy. The other accessories allow for the use of these switches with iPads and creating our own toys that we can use with these switches.
With these new accessories and toys, my students will have access to different activities that they haven't before.
This will make my therapy activities completely accessible by everyone and help practice on devices that will be used for communication.
