My students need iPads to work on their reading and comprehension skills during center time. The iPads allow them to access stories and dictionaries in sign language via Apps and lessons in NearPod.
I educate students in numerous grade levels and educational settings. I currently work with students in elementary, middle and high school that are placed in either general education or exceptional student education settings. Each of these students have some type of hearing loss (mild to profound), however, a large number of my students have profound hearing losses and communicate using American Sign Language.
Due to language deficits, most of my students struggle academically and fall significantly behind their same age hearing peers in reading.
This is a result of not establishing a strong native language during their early years.
My Project
Previously I was granted a single IPad to use with my students. It allowed my students the ability to view stories in ASL and see other Deaf individuals story telling in their own language. Because of the excitement and gains I've seen, I'm requesting three more IPads in order to allow my students more independent opportunities during center time.
Multiple educational opportunities are available through technology and with IPads I can provide my students literary narratives in ASL and specifically geared lessons in NearPod (interactive lessons that assess student performance immediately) that support reading comprehension and written language.
Differentiation, fostering independence and active engagement are all extremely important factors in educating students. Individual IPads will allow me to provide these elements for my kiddos.
