My school is a Title I school that serves K-5 students many of whom are English language learners and/or come from low-income families. There are over 6 different languages spoken in my class. Many parents work multiple jobs which makes it difficult for students to get academic support at home. Therefore, it is imperative that students get rigorous, engaging, and repeated productive practice for the 7 hours they are at school Monday-Friday.
I have a group of 17 first graders who are motivated, curious, and energetic learners.
They have been a joy to work with and learn from so far this year. My role as their teacher is to provide them with the support and materials they need to ensure they feel safe, loved, and achieve success.
My Project
Many of my students come from low-income families and some of them do not have access to technology at home. Using technology is so important to be successful in the 21st century. My students need practice using devices such as iPads in the classroom to not only strengthen their technology skills, but to have access to engaging educational programs and resources.
All students at my school share computers which means the time allocated to using these valuable resources is divided, resulting in students not having adequate time to learn technology or use them to expand their learning.
My students will use these iPads to access researched-based educational programs such as Lexia and Dreambox. They will also use virtual manipulatives to help them build number sense and strengthen their mathematical skills. When doing research projects, students will learn how to research using the internet resources on the iPads. Having these iPads available for the students will increase excitement towards using technology to learn, as well as open up the options for using various technological tools and resources.
